[ABSTRACT HERE]

Project Rhongomyniad is a research, and technological development (RTD) joint project between the Lusophone, and Germanophone branches of the Foundation aimed at the development, and innovation of paratechnology relative to the usage of railguns, and their components.

Summarily, a railgun is an electric circuit consisting of a power source, a pair of parallel conductors of conductive metals, and a moving armature

[ABOUT]

A railgun is a high-acceleration typical linear motor device1, which utilises electromagnetic force to accelerate a projectile across magnetic rails.

The structure of a railgun is comprised of two parallel metal rails connected to an electrical power supply forming a circuit that is completed when a conductive armature2 is inserted between the rails; electrons flow from the negative terminal of the power supply up the negative rail, across the projectile, and down the positive rail back to the power supply.

The flowing current creates a magnetic field circulating around each rail in a net that is directed vertically, and, with the armature, experiences the electromagnetic force that accelerates the armature along the rails through the use of mobile conductive contacts.

In "augmented" configurations, the driving current is channelled through additional pairs of metal rails, increasing the magnetic field experienced by the armature.

The armature (the projectile) normally relies on the mass, and kinetic energy at the point of impact to produce damage without the necessity of employing chemical propellants whilst achieving exceptional muzzle velocities; a railgun provides much more efficient operational results in terms of energy-and-fuel consumption when compared to operational equivalent propellant, and explosive material.

[simplify/re-do this part entirely

Whilst an integral part of the circuit system, the armature can also be configured to accelerate a separate, electrically isolated, or non-conducting projectile such as plasma. A plasma armature is formed by an arc of ionised gas that is used to push a solid, non-conducting projectile.

The high current required to power a railgun can be provided by various power supply technologies, such as capacitors, pulse generators and disc generators.

However, if the barrel is made of a magnetically permeable material, the magnetic field strength increases because the increase in permeability (μ = μ0*μr, where μ is the effective permeability, μ0 is the permeability constant and μr is the relative permeability of the barrel). This increases the force on the projectile

A plasma railgun is an energy weapon that uses two long parallel electrodes to accelerate an armature; however, the armature, and ejected projectile consist of plasma — or hot, ionised, gas-like particles.

Plasma railguns are typically operated in vacuum, and not at air pressure.

They are of value because they produce muzzle velocities of up to several hundreds of kilometers per second.

Plasma railguns appear linear, or coaxial.

Linear railguns consist of two flat plate electrodes separated by insulating spacers and accelerate sheet armatures. These place extreme demands on the insulators which must be electrically insulating, plasma-facing vacuum components that can withstand thermal, and acoustic shocks, including at the breech.

Coaxial railguns accelerate toroidal (doughnut-shaped) plasma armatures using a hollow outer conductor and a central, concentric, inner conductor. These require insulators only at the breech, but the plasma armature can misfire, or not fire at all due to the magnetic pressure.

The Rhongonomyniad are a series of paratechnological railguns weapons systems engineered with sophisticated thaumaturgically-based nuclear and electromagnetic assets.

[Modular build for the architecture?]

[Anti-materiel/anti-fortification?]

[Maybe some adjustments for containment solutions? Could focus on total annihilation though]

[Focusing the plasma armature through a series of modulating rings to increase the power of the shot?]

[Deciding between plasma, and actual projectiles maybe? Could use magic on both, really]

[The rails, and armature must be built with conductive materials to survive the violence of an accelerating projectile, and the heating of the large currents, and friction]

[The rails suffer erosion with each launch; needs tech to solve that]

[Eliminating/redirecting recoil force through anomalous means is a must]

[The systems should require minimal replacements, and a lot of high-life components]

[Maybe some tech about the barrel of the railgun in order to justify how it functions anomalously without just melting away; should also provide a substantial increase to an armature's velocity]

[Railguns have a massive heat problem, especially with dissipation; which causes the equipment to melt, consequently stressing the materials to an unsalvageable point, and also decrease personnel safety; the material needs to be extremely heat-resistant throughout]

[Maybe an advanced targeting system independently powered by a power cell? could use a system of sophisticated radars, too]

[Lifting some tech from 055-PT

Body Armour: A segmented set comprised of multiple levels of elastic plates and alloys made of hybrid nanofibres over an exoskeleton. These layers are maintained under compression to enhance the resistance thereof against kinetic penetrators.

This involucrum permeates the subjacent components comprehending SCP-055-PT's system. Additionally, thin layers of graphite are utilised for the absorption of kinetic energy created by impacts or vibrations. Once worn, the armour will be hermetically sealed by pressurised seals, and filtered by specialised sub-systems.

Thaumaturgic Fusion Reactor: Inert in the dorsal spine of the body armour. Protected by a specialised encasing, these reactors generate and store psionic-thaumaturgic energy to supply a Unit's systems with energy.

]

[The most common forms of power supplies used in railguns are capacitors and compulsators which are slowly charged from other continuous energy sources; that would be addrest by using a "thaumaturgic fusion reactor" to generate energy. The weapon needs a very large power supply — on the order of millions of amperes — to create enough force, and accelerate the armature. ]
